I am an overgrown child at the best of times but December makes me giddy with all its festive excitement. I love everything to do with Christmas: the lights, shopping, presents, meals, grottos, everything. I’ve not yet been to a Christmas market but I feel like it is somewhere I would really feel at home. Christmas markets have totally exploded over the past decade and are dotted generously across the UK. Here is my round up of the best:
Where is it? East Princes Street Gardens
When to go: 17th November – 5th January
Where to stay: Fraser Suites Edinburgh offers luxury in the heart of the city.
Where is it? Albert Square
When to go: November 9th – December 22nd
Where to stay: The Midland Hotel
Where is it? Alexandra Palace
When to go: until December 16th
Where to stay: Central Park Hotel
Where is it? Bath city centre
When to go: 22nd November – 9th December
Where to stay: No.15 Great Pulteney
These are just a handful of the many Christmas markets you can discover around the country, all offering a variety of festive delights. Many have ice rinks, fairground rides and lots more on top of the standard food and gift stalls. Some offer displays and workshops as well – it is all exceedingly exciting. As Brighton is our nearest city, I will be taking the children for a stroll through the streets and to the Christmas market on the pier, which promises to be a fab event for all the family. I have already spied lots of the lights in the city centre and they are so beautiful, I can’t wait to go back with the children. Throw in a visit to the Snowman exhibition at Brighton Museum and a scoot round the stunning ice rink at the Pavilion and we are all set for a festive day to remember. It beats the oppressive stuffiness of corporate high street stores any day of the week, in my humble opinion!
Do you enjoy visiting Christmas markets in the run up to the big day? I’d love to hear your favourites in the comments.
