The Rise of the STI in Young People

It may make for uncomfortable reading but the rise of common STI’s in young people is startling, with viruses such as chlamydia, herpes and genital warts making a steady increase year upon year.  One theory as to why this is happening is not so much sexual promiscuity as general lack of awareness and education.  If you have teenagers or young people living with you, it may be that you have discussed the emotional repercussions of entering into a physical relationship, but has it crossed your mind to forewarn about the dangers of STI’s? Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted infection among young people today.  They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on during sexual contact.  Not everyone who has the virus develops genital warts and, for the vast majority, including those who have visible warts, the virus will eventually be entirely cleared from the body.  Those with visible warts may wish to seek treatment to clear the virus more quickly; the least invasive option being to use a cream.  …

The Longest Two Weeks

Did you know that a dimple on your breast can be a sign of cancer? I didn’t, for a long time. Even when I noticed it in the mirror, I wasn’t concerned. It looked like a stretch mark; barely visible from most angles, but definitely there. I forgot about it for months, then saw a viral post on Facebook that read, “This is what my breast cancer looks like” above a photograph of a breast with three little dimples; insignificant dents that could pass for stretch marks, I thought to myself. Which reminded me… The next morning I made an appointment to see a nurse, not panicking, just deciding it made sense to get a second opinion. After all, in 14 years of being “breast aware”, I had learned little more than “Indeed, I have breasts”. The nurse I saw performed a simple examination and confirmed that she saw what I saw – there was definitely a dimple. Beneath which, she could feel a lump. Oh. I hadn’t read the script to this point. Five Ways to Kick-Start a Healthy Lifestyle

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are well-documented and, if we’re honest, we probably all know that we could be doing more to be healthy.  However, taking that first step in the right direction can sometimes be the hardest of all.  I am well aware of the risks of my own rather unhealthy lifestyle but it isn’t always enough to make me want to exercise or resist chocolate!  I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that results take effort and I just never going to wake up thin and healthy (unfortunately!) so I am trying to make some small changes that I hope will add to up into a noticeable difference that spurs me on to the next stage of my healthy living journey.
